Why Did Jesus call himself Son of Man?

The term “Son of Man” is one of the most frequently used titles Jesus used to refer to Himself in the New Testament. Here are a few reasons why He might have chosen this title:

  1. Messianic Identity: The title “Son of Man” has roots in the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Daniel. Daniel 7:13-14 describes a vision of “one like a son of man” coming with the clouds of heaven and being given authority, glory, and sovereign power by God. By using this title, Jesus was identifying Himself with this messianic figure who is both divine and human.
  2. Humanity: “Son of Man” emphasizes Jesus’ humanity. It highlights that He is truly human, experiencing the same struggles, emotions, and temptations that other humans face. This makes His teachings, sufferings, and sacrifices more relatable and significant to believers.
  3. Divine Authority: At the same time, the title also points to Jesus’ divine authority. The “Son of Man” in Daniel’s vision is given dominion and a kingdom that will never be destroyed. By calling Himself the Son of Man, Jesus was asserting His divine authority and His role in God’s redemptive plan.
  4. Suffering Servant: Jesus used the title “Son of Man” to refer to His role as the suffering servant who would die for humanity’s sins. This aspect is evident in passages such as Mark 10:45, where Jesus says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
  5. Ambiguity: The title “Son of Man” was less politically charged than other titles like “Messiah” or “Son of God,” which had specific connotations and expectations among the Jewish people. By using a more ambiguous title, Jesus could gradually reveal His true identity and mission without inciting immediate opposition or misunderstanding.

These reasons contribute to the multifaceted significance of the title “Son of Man.” Continue this series for further in-depth study.
